The BMW Three Series – a Benchmark in Its Own Class

BMW have a reputation that stretches around the world. The blue/white logotype – describing a propeller spinning through a clear sky (BMW once developed airplane engines) – is synonymous with high quality. The reason one sees so many older BMWs still being driven around is testimony to the enduringness of their engines.

BMW cars have an understated class about them; let’s have a look at the M3 model from the 80s and 90s for example. Anybody who knows anything about high performance vehicles will not fail to notice when they see an M3 pass them on the motorway. The stupendous horsepower under the hood (taking just 5 seconds to reach 60MPH) is hidden by the basic 3 series bodyshell. It’s the unpretentious design of BMW that contributes to the love of the brand.

The German car manufacturing company have never stopped in bringing out new car models, and in the last 10 years have presented a range of two-door sports cars – the X and Z ranges, which have bucked the trend of the rather refined 3, 5 and 7 series.

The 3 Series has been BMW’s greatest success in regards to car numbers sold. The BMW 3 series is a compact executive car and has been mass-produced for nearly 35 years now. The 3 Series is presently in its 5th generation (as of 2009). Since its first release, the 3-Series is widely considered to be the benchmark of its class, and other car makers are frequently gauged on how close they match this car.

BMW have perpetually been at the vanguard of motoring science – for instance, their current interest in Formula One racing hands them an opportunity to examine their knowledge of racing engines in a high-pressure environment. Outside of F1 racing, BMW were awarded Engine Of The Year Award 2009 for 3 out of the 11 categories which underlines their commitment to engine optimisation and performance.
