Mobile Broadband to Reach the Tube

If the recommendations of government’s Digital Britain report get a nod, we may see mobile broadband connectivity reaching the Tube in London.

The Digital Britain report, which was made public recently, intends to secure UK’s position as a leading nation in the global digital economy. One of the key suggestions in the report was to implement enhanced broadband coverage to cover the entire country’s transport networks.

These plans if put into effect would ensure the passengers on the Tube a smooth and uninterrupted mobile broadband connectivity for browsing, emailing, online entertainment etc. (click for information on what Vodafone mobile broadband has to offer). The idea of providing this connectivity was envisaged keeping the 2012 Olympic Games in mind, which the government wants to be seen as digitally the most advanced games ever.

The plan of providing mobile broadband access on the London Underground had hit roadblocks a number of times and was shelved for some time as recently as March this year due to economic considerations. However, the government is now considering providing broadband connectivity on the Tube and is looking forward to service providers from the private sector stepping ahead to tackle the problem by taking some initiative. Whether the companies will act on these proposals is anyone’s guess, but one thing is certain, they would never take such a step unless they see strong financial reasons behind it.
